History of West St. Clair Township

West St. Clair Township was settled in 1782. However, it was not incorporated until 1875. The township is located in northwestern Bedford County. It's borders include Lincoln Township to the north, East St. Clair Township to the east, Napier Township to the south and Ogle Township, which is located in Somerset County, to the west. The Borough of Pleasantville is located within the borders of the Township but is a separate governmental body.

For years, the West St. Clair Township office was based in the home of the Township secretary. However, in 1988 the Chestnut Ridge Ambulance Association offered to lease West St. Clair Township office space inside their newly purchased building, the former pharmacy in Alum Bank, along State Route 56, now also known as Quaker Valley Road. To this day, the Township office remains inside the ambulance building.

According to the United States Census Bureau, West St. Clair Township is made up of 29.8 sq. miles of land and 0.0 sq. miles of water. As of the 2010 census, the population of the Township was 1730.

In 1980, the National Register of Historic Places listed the Dr. Knisely Covered Bridge and the Ryot Covered Bridge into their registry.
